I train for the outdoors so I can enjoy the outdoors. If I am out of shape or not physically prepared, I become the focus instead of my surroundings. I want to focus on the trail, the animals, the trees, the flowers, the bees, and the butterflies.
My workout schedule consists of one rest day, one adventure day, a couple days walking hills (or treadmill if the temps get too high) and three days of IT or interval training. In my younger days the IT would have been HIIT or high intensity interval training. I took the adjectives off the interval training, because my good friend and certified personal trainer Kevin Driskell (#Live Outstanding) always reminds me, “listen to your body.” If we start a workout with a predetermined idea of intensity it becomes difficult to listen.
The other great bit of advice I heard about working out—find something you enjoy. Dance. Roller skate. Walk. Whatever works for you.
Tiffany and I are fortunate to have the Willow Creek trail and the Humbug Trail in our neighborhood. We get a little nature between adventures. We spotted this hawk on a weekday walk:
